{"id":103,"date":"2005-08-10T08:24:03","date_gmt":"2005-08-10T15:24:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.devradowrite.com\/?p=103"},"modified":"2005-08-10T08:26:15","modified_gmt":"2005-08-10T15:26:15","slug":"browsing-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.devradowrite.com\/?p=103","title":{"rendered":"Browsing Online"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At Sketch For Nothing I found the <a href=\"http:\/\/sketchfornothing.typepad.com\/sketch_for_nothing\/2005\/06\/fortune.html\"target=\"_blank\">fortune cookie <\/a>that should have been mine yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>At culturespace I found <a href=\"http:\/\/culturespace.typepad.com\/index\/2005\/08\/and_then_everyt.html\"target=\"_blank\">this post<\/a> that I would describe as <em>a prescription good for all that ails you.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>At The Missouri Review, a web exclusive  &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.missourireview.org\/index.php?genre=Editorials&#038;title=On+Reading+Nonfiction\"target=\"_blank\">On Reading Nonfiction by Michael Piafsky<\/a> &#8211; where he quotes Samuel Johnson: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;the two most engaging powers of an author are to make something familiar new and to make something new familiar.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Piafsky is partial to: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;a piece so skillfully crafted that despite its seeming mundanity, the author is able to bring to life for me something I&#8217;ve seen a million times but never quite looked at so closely, a piece whose writer could rivet me detailing an ant&#8217;s walk across my front yard.&#8221;\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While Piafsky&#8217;s description could apply to fiction, here he is describing a genre called by many names, among them creative nonfiction or literary nonfiction. The University of Oregon, has online a good definition &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/lnf.uoregon.edu\/whatis.html\"target=\"_blank\">What is Literary Nonfiction?<\/a> &#8211; as well as <a href=\"http:\/\/lnf.uoregon.edu\/notable\/index.html\"target=\"_blank\">a series of Q&#038;As <\/a>with some terrific writers including Ted Conover (<em>Newjack<\/em>), Melissa Fay Greene (<em>Praying for Sheetrock<\/em>) <em>The New Yorker<\/em>&#8216;s Susan Orlean (<em>The Orchid Thief<\/em>), Alex Kotlowitz (<em>There Are No Children Here, The Other Side of the River<\/em>), Barbara Ehrenreich (<em>Nickle and Dimed<\/em>), to name a few.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At Sketch For Nothing I found the fortune cookie that should have been mine yesterday.
